Troye Sivan -

Ease

Brief: Troye Sivan is the latest star to rise to popularity in recent times. Starting his growth through YouTube, the past few years he has been focusing on his music to grow and garner an audience from his previous YouTube channel and also a new audience through music. Troye dabbled with music throughout his YouTube career although never released anything of his own, usually making movie soundtracks (The Fault in Our Stars is an example of one of such soundtracks) After focusing more and more on his first EP (TRXYE) he began to use his YouTube channel less and less, but, used it as a platform to promote his music. A single from TRXYE 'Happy Little Pill' was his first breakthrough hit, and from there he made a name for himself.

He then released his second EP, WILD, which contained his second hit, 'WILD'. After this, he then released 'YOUTH' which was a single from his upcoming album, 'Blue Neighborhood'. 'YOUTH' was by far the most popular song he has produced by that point, and saw radio play throughout Australia. After the release of his first album, he then began to work on his most recent album, Bloom. Since then he has had major radio success with the songs 'Bloom', 'My My My!' and 'Dance To This'.

Background: 'EASE' is one of 5 singles from his second EP "WILD". The song highlights Troye's anxiety due to his career of constant travel and being in the spotlight. Troye wrote this song to alleviate his anxieties and make him feel like he was home, safe and warm.

[Verse 1]

I'm down to my skin and bone

And my mommy, she can't put down the phone

And stop asking how I'm doing all alone, alone

But the truth is the stars are falling, ma

And the wolves are out calling, ma

And my home has never felt this far

I'm down to my skin and bone

"Down to my skin and bone" can mean two different things in this context. For one it may mean that he feels vulnerable and has no protection. It could also be that he is so anxious and stressed that he literally hasn't been eating and feels like he is skin and bone.

And my mommy, she can't put down the phone

And stop asking how I'm doing all alone, alone

At this stage Troye was on tour, his mum is calling to check up on him as he travels

But the truth is the stars are falling, ma

And the wolves are out calling, ma

And my home has never felt this far

The idea that "wolves are out calling" insinuates that Troye is constantly on edge as he feels like a force is out to get him. He feels alone and is homesick.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Chorus]

But all this driving

Is driving me crazy

And all this moving

Is proving to get the best of me

And I've been trying to hide it

But lately

Every time I think I'm better

Pickin' my head up, getting nowhere

Take me back to the basics and the simple life

Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease

Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

But all this driving

Is driving me crazy

And all this moving

Is proving to get the best of me

Tour life is a stressful time, and Troye is crumbling and cracking from the constant moving from the tour bus.

And I've been trying to hide it

But lately

Every time I think I'm better

Pickin' my head up, getting nowhere

Troye is in a constant cycle, everytime he picks himself back up, it backfires and he feels like he is back at square one

Take me back to the basics and the simple life

Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease

His desire to go back to his life before touring and before he got famous is evident in these lines. The want for a basic life is a common theme throughout his album "Blue Neighborhood" especially in his song "SUBURBIA"

Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

In these lines it's clear that Troye misses someone dearly, and the tour life is affecting him more than he thought it would. On Troye's YouTube channel he explains that he would lay there and pretend his mum was with him, rubbing his arm because he was so home sick.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Verse 2]

Now I'm down to my skin and bones

My baby listens to me on the phone

But I can't help feeling like I'm all alone, all alone

The truth is, the stars are falling, babe

And I'd never ever thought that I would say

I'm afraid of the life that I've made, I've made

Now I'm down to my skin and bones

My baby listens to me on the phone

From this verse we can see that Verse 1 was referring to his mum but this verse is referring to his partner. This further highlights how desperate Troye is to be home as he is contacting the people closest to him.

But I can't help feeling like I'm all alone, all alone

The truth is, the stars are falling, babe

And I'd never ever thought that I would say

I'm afraid of the life that I've made, I've made

Once again, Troye isn't too sure of the tour life as he is struggling with anxiety, stress and being generally homesick.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Chorus]

But all this driving

Is driving me crazy

And all this moving

Is proving to get the best of me

And I've been trying to hide it

But lately

Every time I think I'm better

Pickin' my head up, getting nowhere

Take me back to the basics and the simple life

Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease

Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

I've been lyin' to them all

But all this driving

Is driving me crazy

And all this moving

Is proving to get the best of me

Tour life is a stressful time, and Troye is crumbling and cracking from the constant moving from the tour bus.

And I've been trying to hide it

But lately

Every time I think I'm better

Pickin' my head up, getting nowhere

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Verse 3]

I don't need it anymore

Don't you worry about me

I'll be fine if I can breathe

I've been hidin' for too long

Taking shit for how I'm wrong

How I'm wrong

Always wrong

I don't need it anymore

Don't you worry about me

I'll be fine if I can breathe

Troye has realised he is making everyone around him worry. He doesn't want to induce anxiety on others so he bottles it up, hiding his true feelings from everyone so they don't worry. The line "I'll be fine if I can breathe" further emphasises his anxiety.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Chorus]

Take me back to the basics and the simple life

Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease

Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

(Take me back to the basics and the simple life)

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

(Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease)

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night

(Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby)

Holdin' on tight and sleepin' at night
